citylights: my song

Now, I love people. I do. In groups or the other half of a pair, most of my life is lived in the company of my friends/ family/ new aquaintances/ complete strangers. And I love it. There’s so much you can learn from how other people feel about life, or events, or ideas, or pop culture. And there’s nothing like your laugh just dancing on top of someone else’s, or sliding into a whole group’s.

That being said, I enjoy alone time. & whenever I can, I like to look out at citylights. Sometimes, I feel more understood and connected with when I’m tiny and alone against an expansive sparkling city. A smattering of twinkling whites, reds, yellows against graying buildings and the inky night just seem to have a legitimate presence. It’s almost tangible.

Which is what inspired a song. Now, part of this recent observation, and how it relates to my feelings towards a relationship, is draped around a melody, but I wanted to share part of the concept here. Sometimes, if I want to be fully and completely understood without saying a thing, I sit and let myself be held by the citylights. See, what they do, that’s also what music does for me.

You know when a song comes on that perfectly describes you or something you’re going through, you’re like “This is my song!”. That’s like when I look into the city after sunset, and the lights glitter back reassuringly. That’s my song.
